My uncle, a notoriously cheap man despite making north of $250k a year, is possible car shopping for a new daily.
The current situation:
He has a Toyota Highlander Hybrid that has 89,000 on it.
He drives to Cleveland, Ohio once a month from PA (it’s a 2 hour drive)
He works from home for 99% of the month
My uncle blurted this out a few days ago that he was looking at the new Z4 (the actual Z4, not Supra) and his wife then said “just buy a Porsche.” As far as I know there are no requirements except it just to be a car that is comfortable, has all the modern luxuries needed, and can seat at least 2 tall adults (6'1" and 5' 9" respectively). I told him to just buy a S Class to crush the highway miles in and crush the serfs as well.

If he wants to crush the poors, m ay I recommend a 600?
If not, a 2019 Porsche 718 Boxster/Cayman sounds good. They have the sport exhaust standard for 2019.

Sounds like a candidate for a used Genesis G80/G90. Great value for money, power when you demand it, spacious and comfortable, perfect for highway driving, not snobbish, reliable. Other cheaper options are an older Lexus GS/LS, Infiniti M (now Q70)

I’ll second S-class. This thing
https://www.mbusa.com/en/vehicles/model/c-class/coupe/c63cs
is a rocketship in luxury coupe form and he will be comfortable and happy. At $76K MSRP he shouldn’t mind the price tag. If concerned about price, get one like two years old, they are still ridiculous.
Somebody who works in the same building I do has one and it’s pretty friggin sweet. I thought it would cost a lot more, we were all surprised by the price.

he’s not trying to rule the next Banana Republic
![]() 09/06/2019 at 15:55 |

Yes.
His wife will shoot that down though.

To crush the poors, why not an LS? Toyota > German

He HAS to buy new and I did float the idea of a Genesis to him, he is currently doing his homework on them.

He drove his co workers LS once, wasn’t exactly thrilled

For someone who is notoriously frugal I am surprised he HAS to buy one new. Used Luxury is where the real value’s at.
He could consider the new Kia K900. They’re offering $10K off or more. If he’s going new might as well get the best bang for buck.

Why though if she’s okay with a Porsche?
Unless you’re talking about a lower trim Boxster/Cayman, the Mercedes wouldn’t be much more $ but would be comfier for trips.

Lexus ES350 should give him everything he needs and he gets to stick with Toyota and not spend a shit ton of money on a Porsche. He’s not going to care that it’s FWD, but if he does, he can just get a GS instead.
![]() 09/06/2019 at 16:00 |

See I tried to explain that concept to him, but he’s always bought new...never even CPO.

This isn’t a bad idea, wish I’d thought of it. Even brand new they’re a pretty solid deal, just not as good as the used ones.

He’s losing at a Z4, you say S class so... S vert!

She genuinely has no idea what a good Porsche costs
![]() 09/06/2019 at 16:01 |

$250k per year is nowhere near enough income to support that car.
![]() 09/06/2019 at 16:01 |

Might as well get a leftover C7 corvette for cheap( er) and enjoy his money on a fun car . It can do highway runs no problems.
![]() 09/06/2019 at 16:01 |

What ever he does, please ask him not to cheap out and buy a second hand Genesis / Kia .
I’d suggest
A8L 4.0T CPO
A CPO Panamera 4S
S C lass CPO
CPO because he’s just gonna save shit-loads on depreciation and possibly get better warranty with CPO
I have a 7 series and I test drove the S class / A8 and 7 and the Jaguar.
S class - most comfortable and spacious, also interior is very luxury
A8 - Had the most road no ise among the 4 and harshest ride (all relatively sp eaking) NVH,
7 series - most dynamic - drivers car - Interior is the downfall (little to distinguish between 5 , 6 and 7)
Jaguar - lol, do something with that interior and it may look cool, but it felt lacking in ride
PS: Almost went for the C ontinental. It;s just not there among the big boys.

If your wife says “just buy a Porsche”, you go and buy a 911 that day.

![]() 09/06/2019 at 16:03 |

dam fucking right you do! You march your butt down to the Porsche store and buy a 911 Turbo S...but then the wife’s gonna want one

A vette would fit his mid 50's aging style.

gotta be brand spanking new, he doesn't buy used/cpo
![]() 09/06/2019 at 16:04 |

but then I'd steal it :D

C8 Corvette, Lexus LC, some form of Genesis, sure a Porsche I guess, NSX for shits and giggles, etc
![]() 09/06/2019 at 16:54 |

yup, nothing thrilling about the Lexus, Boring as fuck. Gets the job done. The only reason I don’ t have one is bec a us e it’ll put me to sleep on my frequent 500 miles trips.

Keep the Highlander, add in a 911 Targa 4S or GTS.

they have to lose a car to get a car
![]() 09/06/2019 at 17:04 |

I kind of forgot about these and holy depreciation batman! You can find 2016/17 models for under $20k. I wouldn’t be opposed to a Korean land yacht.

Idk if it’s still available but CT6-V. Straight si nister car and will be worth tons later in life.
Has super cruise for that 2 hour drive and 500+hp

2 tall adults
6’1” and 5’9”
Lol
My dad and I are taller than that, and we’re fine with compact crossovers with sunroofs. He actually seems small in his Canyon, though.
